MINNEAPOLIS, MN - April 9, 2004 - Construction began today on a renovation of the former St. Barnabas Hospital building in downtown Minneapolis to create apartments for homeless youth.

Nonprofit affordable housing developer Central Community Housing Trust is renovating the vacant building to create 39 efficiency apartments for homeless youth ages 16 to 20 and 13 apartments for low-income working adults.

The building is located on the northeast corner of Carew Drive and South Seventh Street, near the Metrodome and Hennepin County Medical Center.

St. Barnabas Apartments will offer youth residents stable housing, 24-hour staffing, and supportive services.

Central Community Housing Trust is partnering with three organizations on the project: Allina Hospitals and Clinics, which donated the building; YouthLink, which will provide supportive services for youth residents; and the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota, which provided capital funding. St. Barnabas Hospital was founded by the Episcopal Church in 1871.

Construction is expected to last 12 months.
