 | Continental Hotel This historic building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the last remaining single room occupancy (SRO) residential hotel of its type in Minneapolis.
When purchased by Aeon, the roof of the Continental was deteriorating and the building was mostly unoccupied. However, the building's few residents had lived there for many years (some for as many as 34 years), so temporary relocation of residents was extremely important to Aeon.
The Continental now provides a home for 70 formerly homeless persons. As with the Coyle and the Lamoreaux, on-site staff connect residents with services and resources in the community. Staff provides referrals for education, employment, mental health, chemical health, budgeting, nutrition, housekeeping, and health care services. On-site classes and workshops include budgeting, employment, nutrition, healthy homes/healthy families, and computer use.
This beautiful old building has mission style light fixtures and original bronze doors. Aeon's renovation of the Continental received the "Neighborhood Environment Award" in 1993 from the City of Minneapolis Committee on Urban Environment (CUE) and the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission Award in 1995.
Along with The Coyle and The Lamoreaux, the Continental Hotel is part of the Aeon Opportunity Housing Program for homeless adults, and helped meet the 1991 City/County Task Force on Homelessness. goal to produce 800 units of housing over 5 years to serve homeless persons. Aeon contributed a combined total of more than 280 units to meet that goal.
