Friends and supporters of Aeon and Hope Community celebrated the groundbreaking for the next phase of the Franklin Portland Gateway development – The Wellstone. The event kicked off the second half of the four-phase development, which will provide 250 units of mixed-income housing and significant commercial space to the intersection of Franklin and Portland in Minneapolis.

“Something remarkable is happening here,” said Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak in his remarks. “I want a project like this in every neighborhood in Minneapolis.”

The Wellstone features 49 units of housing, 7,000 square feet of commercial and community space, and green building elements integrated throughout the design.

Tom Fulton of the Family Housing Fund and Minnesota Green Communities suggested that the Franklin-Portland Gateway development can be looked at through “the lens of art,” saying, “The entire Franklin Portland Gateway is a work of art.”

The building is named after Paul and Sheila Wellstone, who visited with Hope Community staff and residents in 1996 when the neighborhood’s revitalization was just beginning.

The Wellstone will stand on the northeast corner of the intersection. Previously completed phases of the Gateway development include Children’s Village Center and the Jourdain, located on the two southern corners of the intersection.

The $13 million development is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete.
