Hard Hat - Crane Ordway May 2006, Mpls/St. Paul Magazine
By Burl Gilyard
Dating back to 1904, the historic Crane Ordway Building in Lowertown was designed by the same architectural firm that did New York's Grand Station and our own St. Paul Hotel. But the Crane has been empty for thirty years. Now, the nonprofit Central Community Housing Trust is rehabbing it and will offer seventy lower-priced efficiency condo units.
"We have a reputation for taking on community challenges that would go otherwise undeveloped," says Gina Ciganik, vice president of housing development for CCHT. "It's in a great neighborhood, right next to the Farmers' Market."
The project is slated for completion in late fall. Luxury condos may be languishing on the market, but, says Ciganik, "I don't know that we'll see a day when there's too much affordable housing."
