The Balmoral

Despite its elegance when built in 1917, the Balmoral had been marred by years of neglect when Aeon purchased it in 1989. Then an old "eyesore," redevelopment and landscaping brought it back to life. Fifty-eight units were carefully renovated to retain the historical integrity of the original architecture and to provide comfort and affordability to low-income individuals and families.

Located near the Elliot Park South Ninth Street Historic District and five blocks from downtown Minneapolis, the old world charm of the Balmoral Apartments is forever preserved. Renovations included refinished hardwood floors, new kitchens

and baths, and new windows. Aeon worked hard to accomplish an "old fashioned" restoration, with door hardware, corridor carpeting, windows and light fixtures selected to blend with the early 1900s era in which the building was first constructed. The remarkable doors on each individual apartment distinguish it as one of the most attractive of Aeon's properties. Another of the unique features of the Balmoral is its landscaped courtyard, where residents can find a quiet respite from the busy urban streets.

Aeon was honored with the 1992 Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission "Historic Rehab Award," presented for its work on the Balmoral and throughout the South Ninth Street Historic District.
